Gunning
The new year has started with a bang. It was wonderful to have our children around the table for a week after Christmas. Beautiful food was made and spoils with cocktails so many times. I’ve had a successful exhibition opening with many friends attending at the end of last year, 2023. See my previous blog post titled “Rugged” to read more about this if you are interested.
I am writing this post from our bus Billy. This is our first trip for the year 2024, a long work trip to Tweed, located in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. It is adjacent to the border with Queensland. A coastal town at the mouth of the Tweed river.
For the next few hours today, we have parked our bus next to a stream in Gunning for a few hours. Gunning is a small town on the old Hume highway, between Goulburn and Yass. Seasoned travelers, parked next to us, who have traveled all over Australia for the past eight months, turns out to be a musician and his partner. Noah restored an old school bus to travel around in and house his studio equipment. Have a listen to Noah’s blues on Spotify at ‘ noah-young_aus’.
Gunning is a small town with a few industrious workers I have discovered. A vibrant fruit and vegetable market welcomed me today on the side walk. I have visited previously, but today to my delight, I found a few shops open, I bought a basket full of mangoes, an avocado so big that it deserves to have a meal planned around it and peaches of varying varieties grown at a local orchard.
Another great find was meeting the owner Min, ‘Will & Russ’, an earthy foraged goods store. See beautiful images on Instagram under the Instagram handle ‘will.and.russ” showing us snippets of her beautiful life in the country. Min and her family live on a farm in Gunning where livestock roam and beautiful flowers, trees, fruit and vegetables are grown. Min organizes a seasonal long table event where a beautiful meal is served in her garden. I hope to attend one day if we so happen to pass through Gunning just at the right time!
Here are a few photos of Min’s farm, the long table event and the store Will & Russ.
