palimpsest
Layered marks are a way to build on and reflect on past experiences. The word palimpsest refers to something that has been reused or altered but still bears visible traces of what has been written previously. We change as events etch new lines and scars on our bodies that are continually etched over. Our marks are recognizable and memorable; they reflect who we are. Every mark is a reminder of how fragile we are, a reminder that we rise and fall and move forward. As Aristotle reminds us, it is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light.
As we all bear scars and traces of turmoil, the landscape serves as a metaphor for us.
It is important to me not to include houses with snowcapped roofs, but instead try to render the landscape rough as it is from my imagination and experience, seeking the light amongst the dark marks, erasing, and gradually reworking until the multitude of marks communicate a place that I somehow sense or recognise as past or present.
