the thingness of the thing
I see my work as a means of thinking and understanding through the process of doing.
Through my art, I have attempted to make sense of places of memory, loss, and displacement over the past 25 years. With my imagination, drawing, and working with clay, there seemed to be a silent pack forming. In an effort to express my thoughts and feelings through art, I transformed ordinary materials into works of art. A process of investigation into the nature of things, the thingness of the thing. I used rocks as symbols of permanence and sacredness in my drawings. A teapot was the very first metaphor I used in my art making process. Under bridges, in a fisherman's van and in a cemetery, I photographed the pot in an attempt to find its "place of fit." Pattern and repetition provided a calm in the turmoil. A repetitive approach has become a way of working for me, almost like a diary entry. It is a practice of being present, practicing what my response will be in the moment.
To process the ebbs and flows of life, I developed an inner world, a language of marks and symbols.
